When clients approach me about selecting artwork for their homes, I often sense a certain trepidation as if they’re about to take an exam they haven’t studied for.
Let me assure you: learning how to choose art for your home needn’t be intimidating. In fact, it can be one of the most personal and enjoyable aspects of furnishing your home.
Beyond Strong Opinions
Contrary to what many believe, you don’t need to possess a strong point of view about art to select pieces that enhance your space. Art selection isn’t about demonstrating your expertise in contemporary movements or classic periods, it’s about creating a dialogue between your space and the emotions you wish to evoke within it.
The most successful art selections I’ve curated have often been with clients who simply trusted their instinctive responses to certain pieces. That visceral reaction, that moment when something speaks to you is far more valuable than any academic understanding of art history.
The Color Conversation
One of the most reliable approaches to selecting artwork is to consider the color palette of your space. Artwork that complements the existing colors creates a sense of cohesion and intentionality. This doesn’t mean matching exactly—rather, look for pieces that either harmonize with your palette or introduce a complementary accent that elevates the entire composition. This does not mean you can’t go bold!
We recently worked with a client whose living room featured soft teal and mustard. Rather than selecting artwork in identical hues for the adjoining dining area, we chose an abstract mixed media artwork that introduced subtle coral and orange elements like a brilliant sunset that created a sophisticated tension and brought the entire space to life.

Location-Specific Curation
Each room in your home serves a different purpose and induces different emotions. Your artwork selections should reflect this specificity. The serene, contemplative piece that works beautifully in your bedroom might feel entirely out of place in your vibrant kitchen or social gathering spaces.
Consider how you use each space and what emotional tone you wish to set. A dining room where you entertain might benefit from conversation-starting pieces (cue boldness), while your home office might call for something that inspires focus and creativity.
Emotional Resonance
The most powerful art selections are those that evoke emotions aligned with the purpose of the space. When art resonates with you emotionally, it transforms a room from merely beautiful to deeply personal and meaningful.
Consider for a reading nook, selecting a series of misty landscape paintings that create a sense of contemplative tranquility which complements the escaping purpose of the space. Conversely, opting for vibrant, dynamic pieces that reflect the energy and joy of gatherings are wonderful for a great room.
Interacting with Nature
In spaces blessed with stunning views, artwork presents a unique opportunity to create a dialogue between interior and exterior. Rather than competing with the natural vista, select pieces that echo elements of the view. Perhaps introducing the colors of the sunrise, the textures of the landscape, or the movement of water.
A past client had a very narrow wall surrounded by doors and windows to a deck overlooking the water. We decided to subtly reference the backdrop of trees visible from the windows with a 3D tall and narrow encaustic work of a single tree. It created a seamless transition between inside and out that enhanced both the artwork and the view.

Selecting artwork is a journey which should be approached with curiosity, openness, and joy rather than pressure or anxiety.
